The distance that separate an island from the mainland, despite the growth of transportation systems in speed and accessibility, it is the measure of a sense of insularity of those who live surrounded by the sea. In Japan I have often heard repeating the phrase “shima guni“, or “island state“,to communicate a way of thinking and living separate. This sense of isolation varies with the experience of time and space that changes as far as the distance from the mainland is changed. In an article from G. Baldacchino “The bridge effect“, for example, are discussed the effects that an artificial connection – bridges, tunnels or other – have on an island. In the archipelago this rooted sense of insularity is fragmented into several parts that tend to recognize a ‘total identity’. A shared isolation is a sine qua non of the archipelago. Based on these reflections from a few years I have begun to explore and experience the islands with a certain attraction for the peripheral condition of the bounded lifestyle. Visual Island aim to be an archive or a collection of material mostly visual, a working tool for researchers, travelers, anthropologists, or lovers of the islands in the broadest sense. In the first stage of the project, the website will collect and select the work of different “visual islanders” world wide. In the second stage, the intention is to grow the project offline transferring and saving the archive into external hard drives to build up a database, the broadest possible, including island worldwide. Confident that such a path can reach high summits of interest over time as the islands become exclusive and unique centers for the conservation of culture, including customs, history and folklore of a people. The archetype of the treasure island it is alive not only as a separate memory, but involves us in the knowledge that a sunk civilization, or a civilization no longer alive, is the sacrifice offered to the progress of urban densification.

"Arch-vision" is a video for Gemine Muse, a project that aims to create a relationship between an existing artwork and the work of young artists. The choice was a plaster of the archer Teucer by H. Thornicroft (1850-1925). The missing element of the statue, the arch, is created by hand-made drawings of all the plasters of the museum edited in different layers of the video. The shape is the arch and movement is the tension of Teucer's gaze.
